Refinery fined for violations

The state Department of Health has filed a complaint against Chevron USA and fined it $37,000 for hazardous waste violations at its refinery in Kapolei.
During inspections done in March and April 2001, the department's Hazardous Waste Section found that the refinery had collected and treated oily sludge that is normally associated with refineries without first concluding if it was a hazardous waste and getting a permit to treat it. The company also was cited for failing to properly complete a required biennial report on its hazardous waste.
Chevron has 20 days to respond.
