Park service beefs up security at visitor sites

Advertiser Staff

The National Park Service has tightened security at the USS Arizona Memorial by implementing a "no bag policy" at the visitor attraction.

The policy is in response to the nation's heightened threat level against terrorism and takes into account the memorial's location at Pearl Harbor. The security measures prohibit purses, handbags, fanny packs, backpacks, camera bags, diaper bags, luggage, and other items that can conceal a weapon. The policy also applies to the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park and the USS Missouri Memorial.

Storage space for these items will be available for a $2 fee. Only items no larger than 30 inches tall by 30 inches wide and 18 inches deep will be accepted.

The security guidelines had been relaxed last month and personal items were allowed at the three attractions.

Meanwhile, travelers using Honolulu International Airport and other airports statewide may encounter delays because of stepped-up security measures since the increase in federal security levels, state Transportation Director Rod Haraga said yesterday.

"There may be increased random inspections of vehicles," Haraga said, urging travelers to have someone drop them off and pick them up rather than wait for parking.

"Allow extra time to make your flights," Haraga said, because "heightened security measures require more time to properly screen travelers.

Air carriers have been advised to review all personnel identification tags for access to secured areas at the airports, he said.
