Conway's second 69 lifts UCLA into lead

Steve Conway shot his second consecutive 3-under-par 69 and Ray Moon fired a tourney-best 62, leading UCLA into first place after two rounds of the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate Golf Tournament on the Big Island.

UCLA shot a four-man aggregate score of 271 yesterday for a 554 total. TCU, the first-round leader, shot 279 for 555. Arkansas is third at 558.

TCU's Adam Meyer is the individual leader with a 68—135. Teammate Adam Rubinson (70-136) is tied for second with Arkansas' Andrew Dahl (68), Oklahoma's John Kidwell (68), Texas Tech's Mark Hull (70), Fresno State's Nick Watney (69) and Baylor's Ryan Bace (71).

Moon is in a three-way tie at 139 in the tournament being played at the Waikoloa Beach and Kings' courses.

University of Hawai'i-Manoa shot 283 and is tied for 17th place with Oregon State (277) at 578. Host UH-Hilo is 22nd at 296—587.

Eric Chang is the leading Rainbow at 69—142, while the Nicolas Mason leads UHH at 71—144.



DIVISION II BASKETBALL

• UH-Hilo wins: Ryan Abrahams scored 26 points, hitting three 3-pointers, and Osadonor Esene added 20 as University of Hawai'i-Hilo beat Western New Mexico, 83-76, in a Pacific West Conference men's basketball game at Silver City, N.M., yesterday.

The Vulcans (14-6, 6-3) rallied from a 41-37 halftime deficit to beat the Mustangs (3-16, 1-8).

Malcolm Connor scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Mustangs.



• Chaminade falls on road: Justin Hassell scored 29 points to lead Montana State-Billings to a 97-83 Pacific West Conference men's basketball win over Chaminade, last night at Billings, Mont.

Roy Stigall led the Silverswords (9-12, 4-5) with 19 points. The Yellowjackets improved to 13-6 and 6-4.



PADDLING

• Regatta on tap: The 15th annual Hawai'i Law Enforcement/Fire Canoe Regatta will be Sunday at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

The event is open to all current or retired federal, state, and county law enforcement or fire personnel and their immediate family members.

The entry fee is $120 per six-person crew, or $100 per four-person crew. The regatta is a benefit for the American Cancer Society.
