Mililani girls beat No. 3 seed Baldwin

The Mililani High School softball team scored four runs in the third inning on bases-loaded walks and went on to defeat No. 3 seed Baldwin, 8-2, last night in the quarterfinals of the Chevron State Championship tournament.

The Trojans (14-1) will play No. 2 seed Kamehameha (16-2) in tonight's semifinals at 8 o'clock at the University of Hawai'i's Rainbow Wahine Stadium. No. 1 seed Kailua (14-0) will face unseeded Waiakea (11-2) in the first semifinal at 6.

The tournament schedule was pushed forward one day because of rain Thursday and yesterday. The championship game will be played at 8 p.m. tomorrow.

Last night's Baldwin-Mililani game was re-started from Thursday with no outs in the bottom of the first inning. The Bears (14-4) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second after Sabrina Alesna-Mindoro walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Then, on the first pitch of the bottom of the third, a power outage caused the stadium lights to go out and the game was delayed for 17 minutes. When play resumed, Baldwin starter Alesna-Mindoro began having trouble throwing strikes and the Trojans were able to score four runs on two hits and five walks.

"You could see a definite change," Bears coach Ryan Souza said. "There was a lot (of distractions), from the rain last night to waiting until 12:30 (p.m.) today to find out we were playing (at 7 p.m. instead of 4), and then when the power went out, I think it took our energy with it."

Baldwin got a run back in the fourth to make it 4-2, but the Trojans answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and made it 7-2 in the fifth and 8-2 in the sixth.

The Bears made seven errors in the game.

"The walks and errors killed them, but you know Sabrina is a better pitcher than that, and they usually don't make errors," Mililani coach Mike Okimoto said. "We were fortunate; it's a big win."
