Hawai'i's Takata spurs USA judo team

Team USA turned in a dominating performance, defeating Mexico, 7-1, on the first night of the judo event in the 2003 Titan Games at the San Jose State University Event Center.

In the men's 132-pound division, USA's Taylor Takata (a 2000 Iolani graduate from Wahiawa) defeated Arturo Lopez, Mexico City, Mexico, by a half point.

The match went the five-minute limit. Takata scored a minor point with a leg sweep at the halfway point, and then with about a minute remaining, scored a half point with an inner leg reap.

The United States will take on China today.

COLLEGE GOLF

UCLA wins Waikoloa: UCLA shot a final-round aggregate 282 yesterday for an 836 total and a two-stroke victory over Texas Christian in the TaylorMade/Waikoloa Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at the Waikoloa Kings' Golf Course on the Big Island.

TCU shot 283 for 838. Houston (287), Oklahoma (287) and Washington (282) finished tied for third at 849.

The University of Hawai'i-Manoa shot 297 for 875 to tie Baylor (300) for 17th place. Host UH-Hilo shot 303—890 for 23rd place.

TCU's Adam Meyer fired a 5-under 67 to win the individual medalist title at 202.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

UH wins, loses: Melissa Coogan allowed one run and Tracie Uchima doubled in two runs as the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine defeated No. 23 Oregon State, 2-1, to snap a three-game losing streak yesterday in the UNLV Softball Desert Classic in Las Vegas.

In the second game, Hawai'i fell to Utah, 4-3, despite solo home runs from Stacey Porter and Kate Judd.

Hawai'i (3-4) faces No. 1 UCLA today and Central Michigan in the nightcap.

TENNIS

Tournament at new site: The Feb. 22-23 O'ahu Jr. Vet/Senior Tournament will be at the new Central O'ahu Regional Park complex.

The tournament is sanctioned by the U.S. Tennis Association/Hawai'i Pacific Section.

It is open to women and men ages 30 to 80. Entry fee is $15 for singles and $25 per doubles team.

ULTIMATE FIGHTING

Hilo's Penn in title fight: Hilo's BJ Penn takes on Caol Uno of Japan for the Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight title Feb. 28 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

Penn (6-1-0) and Uno (13-4-2) will be the co-main event on an eight-fight card featuring a heavyweight title fight between champion Ricco Rodriguez (10-1-0) of Las Vegas against Tim Sylvia (16-0) of Davenport, Iowa.

The bouts will be televised on live on pay-per-view starting at 5 p.m. Hawai'i time.
