Two women killed in crash in Kalaeloa

Two people were killed and two others hospitalized in critical condition after a 27-year-old man lost control of his vehicle yesterday morning in Kalaeloa and slammed into a utility pole, police said.

Police said speeding and alcohol appeared to be factors to the accident.

The 2001 silver Toyota Corolla was traveling west on Roosevelt Avenue at a high speed and overtaking other vehicles, witnesses told police. It went out of control just past Kasaan Bay Street, skidded on gravel, and smashed into the pole.

One woman was killed when she was ejected from the car. Another woman was pinned in the vehicle and died at the scene. Police weren't sure about their ages.

The other two passengers, a man and a woman believed to be in their 20s, were taken by ambulance to St. Francis Medical Center West, then taken by helicopter to The Queen's Medical Center, where they were in critical condition.

The driver was also taken to St. Francis, where he remained in guarded condition, said Sue Rauch, Emergency Medical Services district chief.

Police said the dead women were the 10th and 11th fatalities of the year, compared with 12 at the same time last year.

They said they did not know if any of the five people in the car were wearing seat belts.
