Navy SEALS help ailing man

Four Navy SEALs parachuted to a bulk-carrier east of the Big Island yesterday to provide medical assistance to an ailing crew member.

The SEALs jumped from a C-130 Hercules from Coast Guard Station Barbers Point to the Nordrhine when it was 315 miles from Hilo, Coast Guard Petty Officer Lauren Smith said.

Zhivko Nedev, 49, was suffering an enlarged prostate and was in need of immediate medical attention, Smith said. The SEAL team stabilized Nedev and prepared him for transport to Hilo Medical Center, she said.

The SEALs were accompanying Nedev to Hilo aboard the Nordrhine, which was scheduled to arrive in Hilo at 10 a.m. today.

Suction traps dry-dock diver

A man had a narrow escape yesterday afternoon when he was trapped underwater while working on a submerged dry dock.

The man had been diving beneath the dock at Marisco Ltd. in Barbers Point Harbor, Capt. Kenison Tejada said. He had been underwater for about 45 minutes and was about 6 feet beneath the surface when his left arm was sucked into an 8-inch hole that apparently served as a vent or drain.

The suction held his arm, from fingertip to shoulder, firmly in the hole.

Fellow divers continued to feed the man air from additional tanks while workers lubricated the man's arm and slowly raised the dry dock.

After about an hour, the man was able to move his arm enough to break the suction's hold, and he was freed, Tejada said.
