10 Hawai'i basketball players chosen

Punahou School's Becky Hogue, Rachel Kane and Elyse Umeda are among 10 senior high school basketball players from Hawai'i nominated for the McDonald's All-American Basketball Team, according to a press release.

Other female nominees from Hawai'i are Megan Ching of Kamehameha Schools, Amber Lee of McKinley High and Mele Mateaki of Farrington High. Male nominees are Bobby Nash of Iolani School, Jason Rivers of Saint Louis School, Daniel Tautofi of Kaimuki High and Ma'afu Finau of Maui High.

A total of 1,700 boys and 1,000 girls from around the nation were nominated by the McDonald's All-American Basketball Team Selection Committee, a group of nationally prominent basketball experts.

Later this month, 24 girls and 24 boys will be selected to compete in the McDonald's All-American Basketball Games, scheduled for March 26 in Cleveland.



WRESTLING

• Kahuku sweeps: Kahuku High swept the boys and girls titles at the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division Wrestling Championships yesterday at the Red Raiders gym.

Kahuku's boys amassed 207 points to outdistance second-place Kaiser (136.5).

Kahuku's girls tallied 175 points to pull away from second-place Moanalua (90).

• OIA Championships: 'Aiea won the boys race, Castle took the girls event and Nanakuli placed first in the mixed division at the Na Opio/O'ahu Interscholastic Association Paddling Championships yesterday at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

'Aiea's crew of Kalei Hanohano, Aloha Robert Gannon, Lawrence Leovao, Brandon Rodd, Ranon Aquino and Kar Sivas completed the half-mile race in 4 minutes, 16.71 seconds.

Castle's crew of Jayna Kapono, Malia Lee, Pua Heimuli, Malia Heimuli, Amanda Snodgrass and Faren Salis finished in 5:05.92.

Nanakuli's crew of Noe Huddy, Leoan Mathewson, Chelsee Smith, Jonathan Lucero, Ikaika Smith and Richard Barrett won in 4:31.04.

'Aiea's boys and Campbell's girls won the B division races.

• Oda, Wallace triumph: Ronnie Oda of Kamehameha won the girls title and Drew Wallace of Punahou captured the boys title in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Diving Championships Friday at Iolani.

Oda amassed 412.05 points, and Wallace scored 404.05.

Peter Burgess of Saint Louis won the JV title with 528 points.

The Eastern Division championships will be held Saturday at Kailua High, starting at 4 p.m.

The top six teams from the West and East, varsity and junior varsity, will compete for the OIA overall championship next Monday at 6 p.m. at Stan Sheriff Center.
