UH softball splits at Las Vegas tourney

For the second day in a row, the University of Hawai'i split two games at the UNLV Softball Desert Classic in Las Vegas.

The Rainbows topped Central Michigan, 3-1, in the second game after falling to UCLA, 10-2, in the opener.

Shannon Tabion pitched a four-hitter with two walks and three strikeouts against Central Michigan.

UH's Stacey Porter hit a homer and April Crowell and Kate Judd had two hits apiece.

Against the Bruins, UH's Melissa Coogan gave up 11 hits in 5¡Êinnings and Paula Blanning surrendered four more in ¡ of an inning. The game was shortened to six innings because of the eight-run mercy rule.

Crowell and Porter homered for Hawai'i.

Hawai'i moved to 3-5 on the season.



BASEBALL

• Hilo routed: Cody Clark batted 5-for-5 with three runs and three RBIs, and Drew Moffitt went 3-for-5 with a double, homer and five RBIs as Wichita State routed Hawai'i-Hilo, 16-5, yesterday at Simmon's Field.

It was the season opener for the Shockers, while Hilo dropped to 3-17.

Kyle Banick picked up the win by giving up one run in five innings of relief.

Hilo led 4-1 after two innings.

Kaliko Oligo, Nalei Sooto, Tom Henderson and Douglas Nassimbene each had two hits for the Vulcans, while Chris Savio doubled and had two RBIs.



SOCCER

• deHay will play for 'Bows: Robin deHay, a 2000 graduate of Kamehameha Schools, will transfer from Stanford and join the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team next season.

deHay played two years for the nationally ranked Cardinal, playing in 17 total matches and recording five points (2 goals, 1 assist). She is a two-time all-state and All-Interscholastic League of Honolulu first-team selection.

Earlier this month, Krisha Kai, an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division first-team honoree out of Kahuku High, signed with the Rainbows.
