Nu'uanu case prompts chargesPolice on Saturday arrested and charged a 55-year-old man with misdemeanor counts of third-degree assault and impersonating a police officer. Wayne Kotomori was released Saturday after posting $200 bail.
The charges stem from an alleged attack Feb. 7 on an employee of Honolulu Memorial Park at 22 Craigside Place in Nu'uanu. Kotomori has been involved in picketing at the cemetery site over the planned demolition of the cemetery's pagoda.
Police said Kotomori went into the office of the cemetery's general manager on Feb. 7 wearing an HPD T-shirt and identifying himself as a Honolulu police officer.
Attack victim's skull fractured
A 40-year-old man suffered serious multiple skull fractures when he was repeatedly struck on the head with a 2-foot-long, 2-inch wide piece of wood during an argument on Isenberg Street in Mo'ili'ili. Police are seeking to charge another man with attempted second-degree murder, second-degree assault and second-degree robbery in connection with the attack.
According to police, the injured man and a male companion, also 40, were confronted by the suspect and two other men after they parked a van on the 1000 block of Isenberg Street at about 11 p.m. After a short argument, the van's occupants went into a nearby lounge. They returned at 10:50 p.m. and found that the van had been damaged.
One of the men went to look for the person he had been arguing with earlier while his companion called police. During a confrontation with the suspect, the victim was knocked unconscious. His companion was also struck with the wooden object.
Police responding to the scene arrested two of the men who had confronted the victim and his companion. One of the two arrested was being held for second-degree robbery on suspicion that he took a watch and gold chain from the man who was unconscious.
Both the victim and his companion were taken to The Queen's Medical Center. One was treated for minor injuries and released, police said.
