THE LEFT LANE
Going a bit barmy

Advertiser Staff and News Services

If your cheapskate friends who don't get HBO keep bugging you to tape the shows that everyone is talking about, tell 'em they can see dead people without any help from you: They can rent "Six Feet Under — The Complete First Season" (not rated), just out on video.

"American Beauty" writer Alan Ball's series follows a dysfunctional clan running an L.A. funeral business: an easygoing Seattle food co-op dude (Peter Krause) and his uptight, closeted brother (Michael C. Hall), who inherit the business from their dad (Richard Jenkins); their prim adulteress mom (Frances Conroy); disaffected younger sister (Lauren Ambrose); and the mysterious girlfriend (Rachel Griffiths) who keeps Seattle Dude off balance. The mix of black humor and grown-up soapy drama includes characters having fanciful conversations with the departed.

Calling all bozos

Glen Bailey
Not only is clowning around acceptable at this learning event, it's encouraged. The Magician and Clown Convention, 9 a.m.-7 p.m. March 15 and 9 a.m.-noon March 16 at the Blaisdell Center, will offer both novice and expert entertainers "new skills and give them an opportunity to see new effects," said organizer and magic man Glen Bailey.

Registration for the two-day workshop with lectures, demonstrations and other events is $75 for adults and $50 for ages 17 and younger, until March 1; $85 and $60, respectively, after March 1. For a registration packet, call 488-5162.

Isle deejay on 'Brady'

Lanai
Watch for Lanai, the Island Rhythms 98.5 FM deejay, on "The Wayne Brady Show" at 9 a.m. today on KGMB-9.

He was in Los Angeles last week for what turned out to be a star-studded visit. He did a segment on Brady's talk-variety show, using the Lanai and Augie (his radio partner) joke book for his bit, but he also had an NBA All-Star jam with the likes of Juwan Howard, Predrag Savovic and Jarrin Akana, all from the Denver Nuggets, and Brady, whose wife is the former Mandie Taketa of Hawai'i.
