Mililani takes third in state softball

Advertiser Staff

Miki Asamura pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts and no walks as Mililani trounced Waiakea, 18-0, yesterday to take third place in the Chevron State Softball Tournament.

The Trojans (15-2) banged out 17 hits to beat the Warriors (11-4) in a game shortened to five innings by the 10-run rule at the University of Hawai'i's Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Charity Senas went 4-for-5 with a double and six RBIs, B.J. Shimamoto went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Erika Au went 2-for-3 with three RBIs as Mililani scored four runs each in the second and fourth innings and 10 in the fifth.

Laine Shikuma went 2-for-2 for Waiakea, which committed six errors.

Trojans coach Mike Okimoto said Saturday night he encouraged his team to "play for pride" after a tough semifinal loss to Kamehameha.

"I told them if we finish third, that's third in state, not third in the (league)," Okimoto said. "I told them, 'To be one of the top three teams in the state, that's pretty good.' "
