UH softball team upsets third-ranked Cal, 1-0

University of Hawai'i pitcher Melissa Coogan shut out No. 3 California, 1-0, yesterday on the final day of the UNLV Desert Classic in Las Vegas.

Noelle Izumi scored the lone run for the Rainbow Wahine in the third inning.

Coogan (3-2) did not strike out or walk any batters, and allowed four hits over seven innings.

Kaleo Eldredge (Baldwin '01) batted 1-for-3 with a double for the Golden Bears, the defending national champions.

UH evened its record to 5-5; California fell to 10-2.


SOCCER

• Mililani girls No. 1 seed: Mililani, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion and defending state champion, was awarded the No. 1 seed for the Meadow Gold Girls State Soccer Championship to be held Wednesday through Saturday on Maui.

Punahou, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, is seeded No. 2, followed by Maui Interscholastic League champion Baldwin and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Hawai'i Prep. The four seeded teams will receive first-round byes in the 12-team tournament.

Mililani (12-0-1), Baldwin (12-0) and Punahou (9-0-1) are the only undefeated teams in the field.

Five OIA teams, three BIIF, two MIL, and one each from the ILH and Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation are entered in the tournament.

Fourteen games will be played at War Memorial Stadium and four at Keopuolani Park.

Punahou has won five of the 21 girls state tournaments, followed by Pearl City with four and Iolani, Kamehameha and Mililani with three each.

BASEBALL

• Hilo swept: Wichita State swept the University of Hawai'i-Hilo, 14-4 and 4-3, yesterday at Simmon's Field in Kailua, Kona.

Nick McCoola led the way for the Shockers in the first game, batting 4-for-4 with a double, five runs and five RBIs. Brandon Hall went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBIs.

In the second game, Wichita State scored the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth inning when third baseman Brandon Green scored on a fielder's choice.

Hilo outhit Wichita State 9-7 in the game, but left nine runners on base.

Wichita State improved to 3-0, while Hilo dropped to 3-18.


TITAN GAMES

• Au, Kotaka win: The International Karate Federation's Elisa Au and George Kotaka both won two matches against Mexican opponents at the Titan Games on Saturday at San Jose, Calif.

Au, competing in the 143-pound division, beat Leticia Montoya, 4-1 and 4-3.

Kotaka beat Xavier Jauregul, 6-2 and 4-1, in the 143-pound division.

In judo, Taylor Takata, an Iolani School graduate, lost to China's Likai Liu by ippon in the 132-pound division.


SURFING

• Valentin wins longboard event: Joey Valentin won the Quiksilver Makahiki Longboard Championship on Saturday at Makaha Beach.

The one-day contest, which featured the state's top professional longboard surfers, was completed in waves of 1 to 3 feet.

Valentin dominated the four-man final with a series of long nose rides. He earned $1,500 for the victory.

Keegan Edwards, who won the event last year, placed second, followed by Duane DeSoto and Bonga Perkins.

All of the competitors were required to ride surfboards at least 9 feet long.

The canoe-surfing and tandem-surfing competitions of the event were postponed yesterday because of poor conditions at Makaha. It will be rescheduled next month, with the specific dates yet to be determined.


CONFERENCE

• Dr. Dot to speak: Dr. Dot Richardson, a U.S. Olympic softball team gold-medal winner in 1996 and 2000, will be the keynote speaker at "Her Story 2003," a women's conference hosted by the Junior League of Honolulu.

The conference, which is designed for women, will take place April 11 at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Pre-registration is $95; late registration is $120.
