USS Arizona fund nears $3 million

The Atherton Foundation and AIG each recently contributed $100,000 to the USS Arizona Memorial Campaign Fund, bringing the total raised to nearly $3 million.

The goal of the campaign — launched in May 2001in partnership with the Arizona Memorial Museum Association, National Park Foundation and National Park Service — is to raise $10 million to finance a major expansion of the memorial's museum and visitor center.

The campaign was begun with a $2 million contribution from the Arizona Memorial Museum Association.

The museum and visitor center were designed and constructed in 1980 to accommodate an estimated 750,000 visitors per year.

Annual visits have increased to 1.5 million, resulting in inadequate exhibition space and crowding, officials said.

Campaign organizers hope to reach the $10 million goal within the next two years.
