GEORGE CHAPLIN, the southern gentleman who helped save The Honolulu Advertiser from financial ruin by shaking it out of its postwar slumber and demanding that it be relevant to new generations of Hawai'i readers, died yesterday at the age of 88. See story.

TOASA FAO, 70, of Kapolei, died Feb. 3, 2003. Born in Aua, American Samoa. Survived by sons, Fofogaalataua Gagai and Ripine Fao; daughters, Aveiaaoga Simanu, Leatuolo Ameperosa and Faatasiga Tupua; brothers, Isopo Tuia and Sonoma Untoa; sisters, Tuitogamatoe Tuitama, Faga and Fualili Untoa; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Visitation 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at O'ahu Cemetery Chapel; service 10:30 a.m.; burial 1 p.m. at Hawaiian Memorial Park. Arrangements by Moanalua Mortuary.

RAYMOND MUNEKI GOSHI, 87, of Honolulu, died Feb. 5, 2003. Born in Pu'unene, Maui. Retired driver/salesman for Aloha Products. Survived by wife, Jean; son, Richard; daughter, Raynette; brother, Roy; sister, Evelyn Sakai. Private service held. Arrangements by Nuuanu Mortuary.

RAY "POPS" HILL JR., 81, of Hilo, Hawai'i, died Feb. 14, 2003. Born in Webb City, Mo. A captain and World War II veteran of the Army. Survived by daughters, Lesley, Pamela and Patricia Blackwell; sons, Joseph and Ray III; four granddaughters. Visitation 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Dodo Mortuary-Hilo; service 11:30 a.m.; burial to follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Casual attire.

JEAN NEAL KARR, 70, of Honolulu, died Jan. 5, 2003. A retired Hawaiian Electric Company employee. Survived by companion, Robert Creek; son, R. Sandy; sisters, Billie Baird and Edwina Neal; grandchildren, Morgan and Heidi; nephew, Kilo Baird and niece, Keri Fernandez. Graveside service 10 a.m. Saturday at O'ahu Cemetery. CHRISTOPHER CLYDE "BUTCH" "STITCH" KELAU, 60, of Hilo, Hawai'i, died Feb. 12, 2003. Born in Hilo. Retired commercial fisherman. Survived by wife, Bernice; sons, Christopher Jr. and Bronson; daughter, Keala; brothers, Derek Kelau and Samuel Kailipaka; sisters, Clementina "Mona" Martin, Agatha "Aggie" Harris, Cynthia "Dolly" Roberts, Donna Lynn Kelau-Spegar and Adeline Kimi; a grandson. EDWARD MORRIS, 80, of Pearl City, died Feb. 13, 2003. Born in Honolulu. Retired Honolulu Advertiser district manager of circulation with more than 20 years of service. Survived by wife, Aned; daughters, Patricia Pilanca, Diane Quapaw, Valerie Krieder and Jo-Ann Elvenia; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Allan Moraes and Alexander Morris. Visitation 9:30 a.m. Monday at Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary; service 11:15 a.m.; burial 2 p.m at Hawaiian Memorial Park. No flowers. Casual attire.

RICHARD NOBORU NISHIKI, 84, of Honolulu, died Feb. 4, 2003. Born in Waialua. Retired carpenter for Universal Studios. Survived by wife, Annie; sons, Marvin, Ivan and Calvin; five grandchildren; brothers, Lawrence and George. Private service held. Arrangements by Hosoi Garden Mortuary.

HELEN RITSUKO FUJIMOTO RAYMOND, 69, of Orange County, Calif., died Feb. 12, 2003. Born in Na'alehu, Hawai'i. Survived by daughters, Colleen Raymond and Joanne De Souza; grandchildren, Benjamin Finley, Jordan Franks, Christian Rodriguez and Raquel Zambrana; brothers, Yoshihide, Yoshimasa and Herman Fujimoto; sisters, Evelyn Maddox. Secretary for the District Superintendent of the United Methodist Church in Honolulu and Department of Education Special Services in Orange County. Memorial service Saturday at Algergate United Methodist Church in Orange County. Donations may be made to Pancreatic Cancer Research.
