Basketball

More notes

Girls basketball: Punahou will host its third annual preseason classic tomorrow through Saturday at the Buffanblu's Hemmeter Field House.

The classic will feature 2002 state champion Kamehameha and O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion Kalaheo, along with McKinley, Kahuku, Kaimuki, Iolani and both of Punahou's varsity teams.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. A four-day pass is available for $12. Students from participating schools with school ID will be admitted free, as will children under 12.

Zebras' new look: OIA basketball officials brought out a new look for the league tournament. The OIA referees, who wore red and black striped shirts not too many years ago, have packed away the black and white stripes they wore in the regular season and are sporting gray shirts with black stripes.

"We want to blend into the game and not be noticed," said Sam Delos Reyes, the head of the OIA officials association.

Swimming: Kaiser won the OIA girls swimming championship without a first-place finish in the swimming events.

Diver Michelle Fujioka, who was unopposed, was the Cougars' only event winner.

Two relay teams finished third (good for double the points of individual events) and the rest of Kaiser's 170 points came on 16 fourth- through ninth-place finishes. There was one fourth, three fifths, four sixths, three sevenths, two eighths and three ninths.

"Everybody on this team contributed — everybody," coach Sean Barrett said.

Pilar Denight's improvement to contribute important place points typified the spirit of his team, Barrett said.

Corrections

Hoop players omitted: Five girls from Hawai'i who were nominated for the McDonald's All-American basketball team were not included in a report in Sunday's Advertiser.

A total of 11 girls and four boys from Hawai'i were among 2,700 seniors nationally who were nominated for the McDonald's team. The list will be cut to 100 finalists today.

Omitted from Sunday's story were: Christie Ayers of Pearl City, Fatai Hala'api'api of Lahainaluna, Patti Hardimon of Moanalua, Diane Okubo of University and Dalia Solia of Kaimuki.

The other girls nominated were: Megan Ching of Kamehameha, Amber Lee of McKinley, Mele Mateaki of Farrington, and Becky Hogue, Rachel Kane and Elyse Umeda of Punahou.

Four senior boys from Hawai'i were nominated: Ma'afu Finau of Maui, Bobby Nash of Iolani, Daniel Tautofi of Kaimuki and Jason Rivers of Saint Louis.

Twenty-four boys and 24 girls will be named Feb. 27 to play in the McDonald's all-star games on March 26 in Cleveland.

Softball: Following is the corrected box score from Sunday's state softball championship game. A wrong batting order was listed.
