Wilton, Willoughby honored by QB Club

University of Hawai'i men's volleyball coach Mike Wilton and women's volleyball All-American Kim Willoughby were honored as outstanding sportspersons of 2002 by the Honolulu Quarterback Club at its 56th annual Banquet of Champions last night.
Wilton, who coached the Warriors to the NCAA Championship last year, also was named the George Archer Coach of the Year at the banquet at the Pacific Beach Hotel.
Willoughby also was named adult female athlete of the year.
Other awards went to:
- Lauran Dignam, Iolani track and soccer, prep female athlete of the year.
- Derrick Low, Iolani basketball and volleyball, prep male athlete of the year.
- Costas Theocharidis, UH volleyball, adult male athlete of the year.
- Lurline Fujii, tennis organizer and medalist, senior female athlete of the year.
- Erwin Jaskulski, track world record holder, senior male athlete of the year.
- Albert Minn, swimming hall-of-fame inductee, Scotty Schuman Award.
- Don Murphy, UH booster and fund-raiser, Neal Shaw Blaisdell Award.
- Elizabeth Rathburn, Quarterback Club membership chairperson, Joe Reynolds Award.
BASEBALL
Hilo routed by Wichita St.: Phil Napolitan was 3-for-5, including five RBIs and four runs scored, to lead Wichita State to a 21-0 college baseball victory over Hawai'i-Hilo at Simmon's Field in Kailua, Kona, yesterday.
Wichita State is 4-0, Hilo 3-20.
Steve Uhlmansiek and Noah Booth combined on a four-hitter, striking out 17 Vulcans.
Brandon Green also had three hits and three RBIs for the Shockers, who got 20 hits against three Vulcan pitchers.
Nalei Sooto had two hits for UH-Hilo.
SOFTBALL
Hawai'i wins one, loses one: Melissa Coogen pitched a two-hitter as Hawai'i beat Southern Utah, 3-1, yesterday at Las Vegas.
The Rainbows lost their second game against UNLV, 5-2.
Coogen walked three, struck out four and gave up an unearned run in the third.
UH's Stacey Porter batted 2-for-2 with two doubles and two runs scored.
In the second game, the Rebels scored four runs off Shannon Tabion in the third. Tabion gave up 10 hits and two earned runs.
BYUH sweeps Chaminade: Lisa Hansen and Echo Hatch pitched shutouts yesterday to lead Brigham Young-Hawai'i to a Pacific West Conference doubleheader sweep over Chaminade at Lai'e.
BYUH is 4-3 overall, 2-0 in the PacWest. Chaminade is 1-3, 0-2.
Hansen allowed just two hits in a 5-0 victory in the first game. Laura Nelson had a two-run double that gave the Seasiders a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Hatch struck out six and allowed two hits in a 2-0 victory.
HPU splits: Erin Thomas pitched a four-hit shutout to lead Simon Fraser to a 3-0 victory and a split of a doubleheader with Hawai'i Pacific at HPU Windward Field.
It was the first loss of the season for the Sea Warriors (5-1).
HPU won the first game, 4-1. HPU's Rachel Lacar was 2-for-4, including two RBIs. Jamie Reyes had two hits and scored two runs.
Simon Fraser, of Burnaby, British Columbia, is 1-1.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL
Local teams win: Marin Artukovich of Kailua, Kona, and Honolulu's Alika Williams defeated brothers Conrad and Keith Jones of Nashville, Tenn., in the Dinosaur Beach Volleyball Tournament at the Coconut Grove Volleyball court this past weekend.
Gabriela Artigas and Lisa Rapps of Honolulu defeated Connie Geer and Kim Mirana of the Big Island.
The tournament required that the combined ages of the men's teams be 80 years old and the women be a total of 70 years old.
