Jordan's future on 'Idol' decided

Farrington High School senior Jordan Segundo has fallen short in his bid to become the next "American Idol."

Segundo, 18, was one of eight Week 3 performers competing for two spots in the next round of the Fox show. The spots, determined by national fan voting just after last night's show, went to Vanessa Olivarez, 21, of Georgia, and Rickey Smith, 23, of Texas.

A total of 10 contestants — eight weekly winners and two wild cards — will advance to the next round. The ultimate winner will receive a recording contract.

Verizon reported an estimated increase of 5 million phone calls on its national network yesterday. The network processes between 23 million and 24 million calls a day on average.

About 2 million calls came from Hawai'i, although Verizon could not confirm how many of them were made during the show's voting hours, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Hawai'i time.

Segundo, who works part-time at Jamba Juice in Waikiki, was upbeat despite the disappointing news.

"I'm fine," he said. "It was a great experience and I had a great time. I'm just worried about the people back home. I really appreciate their support."
