Pyun to fill court vacancy

HILO, Hawai'i — Matthew S.K. Pyun Jr. has been appointed a district judge for the Big Island's 3rd Circuit.

He is filling the judicial vacancy left by the retirement of Judge Jeffrey Choi.

Pyun, who received his law degree from Drake University in Iowa, has served as a part-time District Court judge on O'ahu and the Big Island. His appointment by Chief Justice Ronald T.Y. Moon to the full-time post is subject to state Senate confirmation.


Information aide named on Kaua'i

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — Mayor Bryan Baptiste has named Cyndi Mei Ozaki, a former intern for the late U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink who has worked in marketing and public relations, as the new public information officer for the county.

Ozaki replaces Vida Mossman, whom Baptiste moved to head the Office of Economic Development shortly after she joined the county as public information officer.

Ozaki is a Kaua'i High School graduate who in May 2000 received a degree in political science and mass communication from the University of Evansville, Ind.


CENTRAL O'AHU

Town meeting set at Waimalu

'Aiea and Pearl City legislators will host a community town meeting at 7 p.m. today at Waimalu Elementary School's cafeteria. The topic of discussion will be the future of Leeward Community College and UH-West O'ahu.

"Community residents will learn more about the future plans for these campuses," said Rep. K. Mark Takai, chairman of the House Committee on Higher Education.

Provost Mark Silliman will speak on behalf of Leeward Community College. UH-West O'ahu Chancellor Bill Pearman will speak on the recently developed strategic plan for the campus.

HONOLULU

Board to act on skatepark

Legislative bills relating to the 911 emergency and 311 non-emergency phone numbers and collective bargaining of public employees in the Police Department will be discussed at the Kalihi- Palama Neighborhood Board meeting at 7 p.m. today at the Kapalama Elementary School cafeteria.

The board is expected to take action on a proposal for a skateboard park at Kamehameha Field and on the Ke'ehi Lagoon canoe halau.


WINDWARD O'AHU

Pali Tunnels to be cleaned

The Pali Tunnel, Honolulu-bound, will be closed from 7 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday for cleaning and maintenance.

The highway leading to the tunnel from Kamehameha Highway in Kane'ohe to Waokanaka Street in Nu'uanu will be closed during the same time.

Motorists will have to take an alternate route and should allow for extra travel time, the state Department of Transportation said.
