San Diego State junior Shayna Miyajima finished second by a stroke — a penalty stroke — yesterday in the 15-team Lady Aztec Spring Invitational golf tournament at Lake San Marcos, Calif.

It was the second runner-up finish in the 2002-03 season for Miyajima, a 2000 Baldwin High graduate who was the 1999 state high school girls champion and reached the round of 16 in last summer's U.S. Women's Open.

After a four-birdie, par-72 Monday, Miyajima shot 77 yesterday for a total of 149, one behind Jennifer Bawanan of Kansas. Bawanan also shot 77 yesterday but opened with a 71 Monday.

"I had a stroke penalty for adjusting the ball on the 11th green; it moved," Miyajima said. "I birdied 14 to get even again, but I bogeyed the second-to-last hole and (barely) missed a 15-foot birdie putt on the last hole."

University of Portland's Rie Ganir (Maui '02) and Cecily Quinajon (Waiakea '99) tied for 39th and 58th, respectively, at 81-83—164 and 84-86—170.

BASKETBALL

MIYAJIMA
• Cal State-Los Angeles

Sophomore point guard Monica Tokoro (Iolani '01 of 'Aiea) was named the Rawlings/California Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the second time this season Monday.

Tokoro scored 53 points and had 15 assists in two games last weekend (26 points, 9 assists at UC-San Diego and 27 points, 6 assists and 7 rebounds at Grand Canyon, Ariz.). She played all 80 minutes, making 20-of-44 field-goal attempts, including 4-of-10 3-point goals, and 9-of-12 free throws.

She remained third in NCAA II national scoring with 22.7 points per game and eighth in assists with 6.7 per game.

Tokoro could move into Cal State-L.A.'s career top 10 scoring list this weekend — with more than two seasons to go.

• Fresno State

Aritta Lane ('Aiea '01) may be coming out of her sophomore slump. She led the Bulldogs in scoring at Louisiana Tech last week with 14 points. Lane is averaging 7.1 points and 4.0 rebounds per game, still under last season, but improving.

Fresno State (13-10) has won three of its last four and plays Hawai'i in Fresno Saturday.

TENNIS

Sophomore Ikaika Jobe (Punahou '01 of Wailupe Peninsula) yesterday was named Conference USA Player of the Week.

"Ikaika finished last fall with an ankle injury, and he's worked hard on rehabbing his injury to come back in stronger condition this spring," coach Jonathan Zych said. "He seems to be more at ease without the pain of the injury and appreciates being healthy. He has a renewed commitment to tennis that shows in his play, which is also increasing the work ethic and intensity of his teammates."

Jobe, the 1999 and 2001 Hawai'i high school singles champion, is 3-1 at No. 1 singles this spring.

WRESTLING

• Cornell (New York)

Sophomore Travis Lee (Saint Louis '01 of Liliha) rested his torn knee cartilage for a while, then went back on the mat and increased his season record to 25-0 with victories last weekend against Harvard and Brown that gave Cornell its 24th Ivy League championship.

"I will probably wrestle the rest of the season with some pain," Lee said. "I will have to try to deal with that." He tore meniscus in his left knee at the National Duals tournament Jan. 18.

The layoff caused Lee to be dropped one rung to No. 3 in national rankings. He had to cancel his scheduled showdown match with No. 1 Chris Fleeger of Purdue Feb. 1 because of the injury. "I was a little disappointed, but resting my knee was more important," Lee said.

"I'll be wrestling only in meets where they need my points to win," he said.

• Embry Riddle (Arizona)

Junior Marcel Suehiro (McKinley '99) placed second in the 125-pound division of the small-college Northwest Championships last weekend at Forest Grove, Ore. Suehiro is an aeronautical engineering major.

• Pacific (Ore.)

Sophomore Kristin Fujioka (Castle '01) placed second at 107 pounds, freshman Jennifer Miyahira (Pac-Five/Mid-Pacific '02 of Manoa) was second in the combined 133/138-pound class and All-America junior Jill Remiticado (Iolani '99 of 'Aiea ) placed third at 121 pounds in the women's Northwest Championships.

In a dual meet the night before the Northwest tournament, Remiticado's momentum-changing victory and Miyahira's dominant win led Pacific to a 14-10 upset of second-ranked, defending national champion Missouri Valley.

WATER POLO

• UCLA

Freshman goalkeeper Meagan Fawcett (Punahou '02) quit the varsity to devote more time to NROTC activities, but did not give up the sport. She is practicing with the UCLA club team and will play this summer with the Hawaiian Islands club team.
