Wichita St. sweeps Hilo in baseball

Wichita State shut out the University of Hawai'i-Hilo baseball team in both games of a doubleheader yesterday at Simmon's Field in Kailua, Kona.

In the first game, Mike Pelfrey went six innings and Trenton Henderson pitched the seventh in the Shockers' 10-0 victory. Hilo had five hits and struck out four times.

Nick Blasi, Logan Sorensen and Shawn Smarsh had two RBIs apiece for Wichita State.

In the second game, Wichita State's Jereme Foster and Tommy Hottovy combined on a two-hitter in a 12-0 rout. Foster pitched the first five innings and Hottovy pitched the sixth.

Drew Moffitt batted 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs for the Shockers.

The Vulcans fell to 3-21, and Wichita State improved to 5-0.



FOOTBALL

• UH receiver arrested: Sean Stennis, a redshirt freshman wide receiver for the University of Hawai'i, has been suspended from the football team after he was charged with misdemeanor third-degree theft Monday.

Stennis, 18, was arrested Monday night at 2555 Dole St.

"We are aware of the situation regarding Sean and are taking all the necessary steps to follow up on the infraction," UH athletic director Herman Frazier said in a press release yesterday.

"The arrest is a violation under the UH student-athlete code of conduct," Frazier added. "The penalty is immediate suspension from practice and competition. ... The suspension will remain in place until a full internal investigation is complete."



TENNIS

• HPU to face BYUH: The second-ranked Hawai'i Pacific men's tennis team will host NCAA Division II defending national champion and third-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i at 11 a.m. today at the Kailua Racquet Club.

The matches will feature six Division II players ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in No. 1 Jan Krejci (BYUH), No. 4 Mikael Maatta (HPU), No. 11 Peter Madarassy (BYUH), No. 22 Blaz Jurjec (HPU), No. 33 Matey Pampulov (HPU) and No. 35 Jan Tribler (HPU).

• USTA National Open: No. 2 seed Treat Huey of Alexandria, Va., and No. 5 John Pettit of Monterrey, Ca., won their semifinal matches yesterday to set up today's noon boys singles final of the USTA National Open at the Central O'ahu Regional Park.

In girls play, No. 1 seed Anne Yelsey (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) will face No. 2 Lindsey Nelson (Orange, Calif.) in the singles final today at 10 a.m.

Hawai'i's Kimi Kaloi and partner Gia Nafarrete (Seal Beach, Calif.) advanced to the girls 18 doubles final yesterday. They will play ex-Hawai'i player Crystal Knysh (Encinatas, Calif.) and Emma Taylor (La Jolla, Calif.) at noon.



TRIATHLON

• Director named: A former race assistant was named event director of the Ironman Triathlon World Championship.

Diana Bertsch of Kailua, Kona, who finished the event in 1995, will work closely with recently appointed event manager Tom Cooney, and will be the primary onsite race coordinator.

Bertsch's duties will include working with the volunteer race committee, serving as a community liaison and local race logistics.

The annual event, which marks its 25th anniversary this year, draws some 1,500 triathletes who compete in the 2.4-mile ocean swim, 112-mile bicycle ride and 26.2-mile run.



RUNNING

• Great Aloha Run: The third-place women's finisher in Monday's Great Aloha Run was Cynthia Mauzerall of Boise, Idaho, with a time of 48 minutes, 52 seconds.

The third-place women's result was not available on Monday.

In all, 11,785 runners crossed the finish line, with another 4,028 military personnel also finishing.
