South Kohala brush fire leads to park closing

Advertiser Staff

SOUTH KOHALA, Hawai'i A runaway brush fire that was burning about 100 acres between Spencer Beach Park and the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel forced the closure of the beach park today.

Big Island Civil Defense officials asked South Kohala residents and visitors to avoid the Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway in that area, and warned residents to be prepared in case evacuations are necessary.

Fire officials said this morning they had no information about any evacuations yet or any homes in jeopardy from the fire, which was burning makai of the highway.
