Arizona takes lead in Burns golf tournament

Mark Warman of San Diego State fired a 4-under-par 68 yesterday to take a one-stroke lead after the opening round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at the Leilehua Golf Course.
Peter Tomasulo (California), Jay Mundy (Auburn), Nicholas Loar (Southern Methodist), David Schultz (New Mexico) and Blaine Peffley (Arizona) are at 69.
UH-Manoa's Matthew Kodama opened with a 70 and was in a seven-way tie for 13th place.
Arizona shot a four-man aggregate score of 280 for a one-stroke lead over SMU and New Mexico. San Diego State was four shots back.
UH-Manoa, UH-Hilo and Pacific were tied for 14th place at 296.

Rainbow Wahine finish 10th: The University of Hawai'i women's team finished 10th at the LUNA Bay Area Classic yesterday at Hiddenbrooke Country Club in Vallejo, Calif.
Host California won the 12-team tournament with a 601 total, 23 shots clear of runner-up Washington (624). Western Athletic Conference member Nevada was third at 642. Hawai'i finished at 689.
Sarah Huarte of Cal won the individual title with an even-par total of 144. Huarte was the only golfer to have two rounds of par or better.
UH's Bobbie Arakawa tied for 23rd after shooting a second-round 81.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
UH-Hilo falls, 13-4: Nick McCoola went 4-for-5 and drove in three runs to lead Wichita State to a 13-4 victory over the University of Hawai'i-Hilo at Simmon's Field in Kailua, Kona.
Drew Moffitt, Logan Sorensen, Cody Clark and Mark Johnson drove in two runs apiece for the Shockers, who improved to 7-0.
The Vulcans fell to 3-23.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
UH sweeps Loyola Marymount: Hawai'i ace Melissa Coogan pitched back-to-back complete games yesterday, holding Loyola Marymount to just one run and nine hits in 14 innings, as the Rainbow Wahine swept the Lions, 4-1 and 2-0, at the LMU Softball Field in Los Angeles, Calif.
Hawai'i scored four runs in the fourth inning of the first game, sparked by Justina Kahaku's two-run single.
Hawai'i scored two runs in the first inning of the second game and Coogan (6-2) took care of the rest with a four-hitter.
Hawai'i improved to 8-6, while Loyola Marymount fell to 3-10.

BYUH signs California star: The Brigham Young University-Hawai'i men's water polo team signed California standout Sam Somerhalder to a letter of intent this week.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Somerhalder, who plays the two-meter position and was First-Team All Bay Valley Athletic League three years in a row, is the first recruit to sign with the Seasiders this year.
Somerhalder, who was named his team's Most Valuable Offensive Player, led Liberty High School in scoring with 125 goals last season and also was the team leader in steals with 72.
