Advertiser staff

A 17-year-old boy was killed and an elderly man critically injured in separate accidents along the same stretch of highway in Kane'ohe last night.

The boy was riding in the back of a pickup that overturned, crushing him beneath. The accident occurred at a popular off-road driving area near the dip off Kahekili Highway between Ha'iku Road and Hui Iwa Street at about 6:35 p.m.

The boy was taken to the Castle Medical Center, where he died.

Shortly before 7:15 p.m., two cars collided head on in the same area of Kahekili Highway. A 77-year-old man in one of the cars was taken to The Queen's Medical Center, where he was in critical condition last night.

The driver of the other car was not critically injured.

Police closed Kahekili Highway between Ha'iku Road and Hui Iwa for several hours while they investigated the accidents.
