Wilfred "Bunt" Baldwin, who rose from the position of a horseback-riding supervisor to overseeing Amfac's five sugar plantations on four islands, died Tuesday. He was 89.

A resident of Koloa, Kaua'i, he was born in Pasadena, Calif.

Longtime friend Mike Ashman said he recalls meeting Baldwin in 1940 at the old Lihu'e Hotel on Rice Street, where the 25-cent breakfast drew sugar growers, cowboys and folks such as Ashman, who was helping set up the island's first radio station, KTOH.

"He was the horseback-riding luna for Lihu'e plantation, and one of the most considerate men I ever knew," Ashman said.

Baldwin rose through Amfac ranks to assistant manager of Pioneer Mill on Maui, manager at Lihue Plantation, and then overseer of both of Amfac's Kaua'i plantations. Before his retirement, he was assigned to supervise the operation of Amfac's five plantations.

"His style was very laid-back," said a fellow former manager, L.A. "Tony" Faye. "He was a very well-liked boss. He made working in sugar enjoyable."

His love of horses stayed with him, and he and his family rode trails all over Kaua'i long after horses had been replaced on the plantation by pickup trucks.

Baldwin is survived by his wife, Anne; son, Peter; daughters, Celie Williams and Mary Agnes; and five grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the family's residence, 5451 Waila'au Road, Koloa. No flowers. Casual attire. Donations to The Rotary Foundation or Wilcox Hospital Foundation. Arrangements by Borthwick Kauai Mortuary.
