Arizona leads, UH 11th in Burns golf tourney

The University of Arizona shot a second-round 283 for a 13-under 563 total and a three-stroke lead over San Diego State and Southern Methodist in the John. A. Burns Intercollegiate Golf Tournament yesterday at the Leilehua Golf course.

San Diego State had a four-man team aggregate of 282, while SMU shot 285 for 566 totals.

Host University of Hawai'i-Manoa shot 284 and moved up three places to 11th with 580. The University of Hawai'i-Hilo (299) and San Francisco (298) are tied for 15th at 595.

Casey Fowles, of Utah, fired a 4-under 68 to grab a two-stroke lead in the individual competition with a 137 total. California's Peter Tomasulo shot a 71 and was second at 139.

UH's Matthew Kodama shot 71 and was in a group of nine at 141, while teammate James Beston shot 72 and was in a seven-way tie for 16th at 142.

The third and final round will be played today at Leilehua starting at 7:30 a.m.



COLLEGE SOFTBALL

• UH, Riverside split: Melissa Coogan yielded two runs on seven hits, and the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine scored four runs in the first inning en route to a 7-2 victory over UC-Riverside yesterday at the UCR Softball Field in Riverside, Calif.

In the second game of a doubleheader, Kimberly Dillon allowed three runs on 10 hits to lead Riverside to a 4-3 victory.

Coogan improved to 7-2 with the victory.

With the split, Hawai'i is 9-7. The Highlanders are 4-7.

• Vulcans open PacWest season: The Simon Fraser University women's softball team won two of three exhibition games against Hawai'i-Hilo Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Vulcans open the season with noon doubleheaders against Pacific West Conference member Chaminade University tomorrow and Sunday at the UH Hilo Softball Field. Only tomorrow's games will count in conference standings.



TENNIS

• BYUH women roll on: The Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's team, ranked No. 1 In NCAA Division II, defeated Division I Santa Clara, 7-2, yesterday at the BYUH courts in La'ie.

Led by top-ranked Adrienn Hegedus, the Seasiders won five of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches for their 32nd consecutive victory and 135th of their last 136 matches.

The Seasiders' next match is Feb. 27 against Chaminade starting at 2 p.m. in La'ie.



WEIGHTLIFTING

• Three from Hawai'i in California contest: Three Hawai'i residents — Tyler Williams, Moses Timbal and Mike Saito — will take part in the World Association of Benchers and Dead Lifters California State powerlifting competition tomorrow and Sunday in Monterey, Calif.

Williams, a 15-year-old Kamehameha Schools sophomore, will attempt to break a world record (375fl pounds) in the bench in the 13-15 age group and 241- to 275-pound weight class.

Timbal of Maui will compete in the 54-60 age group. Saito will be a judge.

Kane'ohe's Taylor Tom, a world record-holder with a 435-pound bench at 148 pounds, has signed up but probably will not compete, according to his father, Dewey. Tom is a junior at the University of California.
