H-1 crash victim dies at Queen's

A three-vehicle collision late Friday night on the H-1 Freeway left one woman dead and the driver of one vehicle charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, according to Honolulu police.

The crash occurred shortly after 11 p.m. southeast of the 'Aiea Heights Overpass on H-1 Freeway.

A Nissan car traveling east on H-1 had slowed to a stop to avoid an unrelated collision when it was rear-ended by a Chevrolet pickup truck. The pickup continued moving and rear-ended a BMW, also traveling eastbound.

A 36-year-old Waipahu woman driving the Nissan was taken by ambulance to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. She later died, police said. The man driving the pickup was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. The driver of the BMW was not injured.

Charges filed in police standoff

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police yesterday filed charges against a 33-year-old man who held another man hostage during a standoff with police at a Hilo hotel last week.

David R. Field was charged with kidnapping, terroristic threatening, burglary, robbery, possession of a firearm in commission of a felony, being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal property damage, police said.

Police said Field took a 51-year-old Maui man hostage when they attempted to arrest him Thursday at the Hawai'i Naniloa Resort on Banyan Drive and barricaded himself in an eighth-floor hotel room for more than 15 hours.
