UH-Hilo sweeps past Chaminade

The University of Hawai'i-Hilo held Chaminade scoreless yesterday in a Pacific West Conference doubleheader, 1-0 and 4-0, at the Hilo Softball Field.

Kristine Kahoalii allowed five hits in the first game for the Vulcans, striking out three and walking one. UH-Hilo pitcher Tara Martinez allowed five hits, with one strikeout and one walk in the second game.

It was the season opener for the Vulcans (2-0, 2-0). The Silverswords fell to 2-6, 0-5.

MORE SOFTBALL

BYUH splits doubleheader: The Brigham Young University-Hawai'i women's softball team split a doubleheader with Simon Fraser University yesterday at La'ie.

BYUH won the first game 4-1 and dropped the second.

In the first game, BYUH pitcher Lisa Hansen tossed a complete game, allowing one run on seven hits, while striking out two.

In the second game the Burnaby, British Columbia, school jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

The Seasiders twice had the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings but couldn't capitalize.

BYUH (5-4) will host Montana State-Billings in a conference doubleheader tomorrow at 1 p.m.

HPU games postponed: The Hawai'i Pacific softball team cancelled yesterday's Pacific West Conference doubleheader against Montana State-Billings because of poor field conditions at HPU Windward Field and rescheduled the games for today.

The games are scheduled to start at noon. Game two of Friday's doubleheader was suspended with Montana State-Billings leading 5-2 in the top of the fifth inning because of rain and will resume prior to the start of today's doubleheader.

Hawai'i Pacific (6-1 overall, 1-0 PacWest) opened the PacWest season with a 5-2 win over Montana State-Billings (0-3, 0-1) on Friday.

BASEBALL

UH-Hilo, HPU split: The Hawai'i-Hilo baseball team split a doubleheader with Hawai'i Pacific yesterday at Simmons Field in Kailua, Kona. The Vulcans lost the first game, 4-0, and won the second game, 9-7.

The Vulcans, who compete as a Division I independent, are 4-24. The Sea Warriors, who compete as a Division II independent, are 3-7.

The two teams play a doubleheader today at 10 a.m. at Simmons' Field.

GOLF

Two tied for lead: Hapuna Golf Course professional Jay Taise and amateur Jonathan Ota of Kaua'i are tied for the lead at 3-under par 68 after the first round at the Hilo Invitational at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

Lance Suzuki, Sean Maekawa, Kellen-Floyd Asao, Casey Kobashigawa and Michael Kim are all one stroke behind the leaders.

WATER POLO

UH falls to UCLA: The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team fell to No. 2 UCLA, 12-5, yesterday in Los Angeles.

Karin van Hoff led Hawai'i with two goals, and goalkeeper Amber Lumb had eight saves.

Punahou graduates and sisters Katie (two goals) and Maureen (one) Flanagan scored for the Bruins.

Team USA wins exhibition: Goalkeeper Brandon Brooks, a Punahou graduate and former UCLA All-American, had three saves as the United States beat the Slovenian national team, 11-8, in an exhibition contest at Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach, Calif.
