Woman reports kidnapping

A 19-year-old woman was allegedly kidnapped in Waipahu last night by a man who later was seen chasing her with an ax in Kalihi.

The suspect, who has "John" tattooed on the left side of his neck, and woman had met three days ago in Waipahu, police said. The suspect went to a residence at 94-110 Pupukahi Street and forced the woman into his car at about 10 p.m.

The woman tried to escape while the man was at a gas station on Dillingham Boulevard. The man chased her down with his car and was carrying an ax when he got out. A security officer reported the situation to police, who arrived at the scene as the man fled in his car.

Prisoner charged in station escape

A 19-year-old man was charged Friday with escaping from the Honolulu Police Department's Alapai station cellblock last Monday and with stealing a pickup truck and burglarizing the YMCA's Windward branch.

Jessie Kalani Dutro is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday at District Court.

Before his escape last week, Dutro was charged with stealing a 2000 Chrysler Cirrus on Feb. 15.

The most recent charges against Dutro are related to incidents that occurred Thursday, when he was captured by police hiding inside an office at the YMCA branch at 1200 Kailua Road. The alleged auto theft involves a pickup truck taken at 1:55 a.m. from a Keolu Hills residence.

Police also charged Luke Makua, 23, of Waimanalo with second-degree burglary. Makua was captured with Dutro while inside the YMCA building. His bail is $15,000.

2 men held in robbery attempt

Two men suspected of being involved in a botched robbery were charged yesterday by police on multiple felony offenses. One of the two men drove over the foot of the other man when the two were trying to flee, police said.

Stuart Kyung Calistro, 39, is charged with second-degree robbery and Bojangles Schaubert, 28, is charged with auto theft, failure to render aid and third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug. In addition, Schaubert also is accused of driving without a license and using fraudulent license plates. Both men have no permanent local addresses and are being held in lieu of $15,000 bail each.

The bizarre set of circumstances leading up to their arrest Saturday started shortly before noon in the parking lot of City Mill's store at 3086 Wai'alae Ave. when a woman, 20, and her father, 42, saw a man inside their car, police said. The man allegedly shoved the woman to the ground and attempted to flee with her purse.

The woman's father and a witness chased the man down. While being held down, the man called out to the second man, who approached slowly in a Dodge Caravan. Police said the van ran over Calistro's foot.

Schaubert drove off but witnesses provided police with a license number. The van was located and stopped at 11:55 a.m. in a parking lot at 1901 S. King St. Police discovered the van's license number was for another vehicle and that the van had been reported stolen by a 61-year-old woman.

Freeway collision victim identified

The medical examiner's office today identified the 36-year-old woman killed in a three-vehicle collision late Friday night on the H-1 freeway near the 'Aiea Heights Overpass as Johnelle T. Tapu of Waipahu.

Tapu's car was rear-ended by a Chevrolet pickup truck at about 11 p.m. The driver of the pickup truck was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
