• Gov. Linda Lingle will be the featured guest at the eighth annual Legislative Breakfast of the National Federation of Independent Business-Hawai'i and Hawai'i Congress on Small Business. • "WAR, TERRORISM AND YOUR INVESTMENT," what's next for U.S. military forces and homeland security — and how recent developments might impact financial decisions — will be discussed in a free Edward Jones interactive satellite broadcast featuring retired Army Gen. Barry McCaffrey. A veteran of four combat tours, McCaffrey also served as "drug czar" under President Clinton, assistant to then-Gen. Colin Powell and adviser to the secretary of state and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. He also is a regular on NBC News discussing issues of national security and terrorism. • The MINORITY BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER OF HONOLULU offers free weekly orientation sessions to minority business owners and prospective entrepreneurs. The sessions, 9 to 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday in the center's offices in Suite 2506 of Executive Center, 1088 Bishop St., will offer advice on business startups, marketing plans, loans, employee handbooks and access to capital. • A free COMPUTER BOOT CAMP is offered 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to all small-business owners interested in using computer technology to improve and expand business operations and management. The program is sponsored by the Small Business Resource Center in partnership with the Small Business Administration, the city Office of Economic Development, Hawai'i Small Business Development Center Network, Hawai'i Women's Business Center and SCORE. The program is open to all clients of the center who have attended a center orientation, offered 9 a.m. Tuesdays or 2 p.m. Thursdays at 1041 Nu'uanu Ave., (#A). • Alternative sources of financing for the small business and a chance to consult with representatives of various financing organizations — including the state Office of Hawaiian Affairs and Department of Economic Development and Tourism — will be addressed in a free discussion sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration. • A new medical "simulation center" at the University of Hawai'i medical school will be part of a presentation sponsored by the Hawai'i Venture Capital Association. The monthly presentations, "Meet the Researchers," highlights ongoing UH research with promising commercial potential. Medical simulation centers will have the ability to mimic clinical or world situations using computer technology and computerized life-sized mannequins to mimic life-threatening situations. The mannequins will display heartbeats, blood pressure and respiration to help make diagnoses. Appearing at Thursday's presentation will be Drs. Ed Cadman, dean of the medical school; and Lawrence Burgess, the school's director of telemedicine and simulation. The luncheon meeting begins with 11:30 a.m. at The Plaza Club, Pioneer Plaza. • The Kamehameha Schools' visions for development, rehabilitation of existing projects — and future relations with the real estate community — will be the focus of an address by the schools' new vice president for endowment. Kirk Belsby will outline "A New Vision for Kamehameha Schools' Endowment Group" in an address before the local chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties.

• Representatives of the media in Hawai'i — including newspaper, radio and television — will take part in a panel discussion of the latest developments in the media and how various advertising strategies might be used effectively by marketers and business owners. The event, "Surviving and Growing in 2003: Using Advertising to Maximize Your Business," sponsored by the local chapter of the American Marketing Association, will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Ala Moana Hotel, 'Ilima Ballroom. Representing the various media in the panel discussion will be: print media, David Kennedy, of O'ahu Publications (Honolulu Star-Bulletin, MidWeek and military newspapers); radio, Jeff Coelho, of Real Radio (KUMU and Big Kahuna); television, Rick Blangiardi, of Emmis Communications (KHON and KGMB-TV); independent TV, Tiny Tadani, of "Tiny TV"; and cable TV, MaryAnn Sacharski, of Oceanic Time Warner Cable of Hawai'i.
