THE LEFT LANE
Got cheers?

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Give 'em an M. Give 'em an I. Give 'em an L and a K. Put it together and whatta ya got? Another "got milk?" campaign. This one could make some local faces famous. The "got milk?" people are looking for a cheerleading Squad of the Year to be featured in a milk-mustache ad in American Cheerleader magazine.

To enter, cheerleading teams must submit a 200-word essay on why they should be the "got milk?" squad of the year, along with a milk cheer, the grade-point average of each cheerleader and a team milk mustache photo. Deadline: March 7. Information: www.whymilk.com.

The contest excludes entrants from Hawai'i and Alaska.

Christian match-ups

Forget about romance on reality TV. This group making love connections has strict rules: You have to be a marriage-minded single who is Christian, courteous and conservative enough to say no to sex before marriage. If you've got those bases covered, Hawaii Christian Singles might be what you've been looking for. Members are alerted via snail mail to possible matches.

Membership starts at $25. See www.christian-singles.org — then click on Hawaii — or call (800) 869-2500.

Vintage-doll exhibit

The third day of the third month marks the day tradition-minded Japanese set aside for Hina Matsuri or Girls' Day. It's also the time when many Japanese families set up a seven-tiered stand in the best room of the house to display their hina (doll) collection, a set of 15 dolls often passed from mother to daughter as heirlooms.

The Honolulu Academy of Arts has received a collection of more than 100 rare vintage dolls, featuring elaborate accessories such as musical instruments and furniture, from the family of Ryukichi Tsuji. The dolls will be featured in the second-floor galleries March 2-23. Ryukichi collected them before World War II.

Correction: A cheerleading contest sponsored by the "Got Milk?" campaign excludes entrants from Hawai'i and Alaska. Information was incomplete in an item of a previous version of this column.
