Aerosmith rocker, family savor beauty of volcano

Barry Flanagan, flush with success with his first all-instrumental CD, "Instrumental Peace" (5,000 copies sold in the first seven weeks of release, with 10,000 more ordered) met with ex-rocker Dave Clark of the Dave Clark Five and performed his version of DC5's "Because." "He rose and danced with his goddaughter, Lani, whose one-year lu'au was the (reason for) the event," Flanagan said. The ex-Hapa singer-guitarist performed with Ernie Cruz Jr., Nathan Aweau and hula stylist Moea Defries-Sylva. IDOL CHATTER: With Jordan Segundo in the "American Idol" spotlight for the past few weeks, those who've been part of his recent past here have emerged. Segundo had a voice teacher, Mary Lou Doehring, from 1992 to '94. "He had this beautiful soprano voice," Doehring said. He "loved to sing every opportunity he had. He took lessons from me, at St. Andrew's Priory, and later, in Wai'anae, where the family lived for a while." Segundo sang for the Waianae Rotary once, "wearing white pants, white aloha shirt and cummerbund, just like Alfred Apaka." ...

As a third-grader, Segundo appeared in the 1994 Army Community Theatre's "South Pacific" as one of the children singing "Dites-Moi," at Richardson Theatre, Fort Shafter, said Vanita Rae Smith, director of Army entertainment. ...

Segundo, who appeared on the Fox show in Armani Exchange apparel, appreciated the gift. When he came to pick up the clothes before his Los Angeles journey, he brought along Jamba Juice for those at the Waikiki Armani Exchange store. ...

Segundo's chances are slim for a "Wild Card" slot on "Idol," but at home, record labels are eager to talk to him, the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra wants him for a pops concert, and a Broadway producer wants to make contact. ...
