Nominations for academies set

U.S. Sen. Dan Inouye has announced his nominations to the U.S. service academies for the class entering in July.

Nominees were selected on the basis of test scores, academic records, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities and personal interviews.

U.S. Air Force Academy: First principal: Stephanie Rice, of Konawaena High School, daughter of Susan Rice and Edmund Rice. Second principal: Marissa Chow, of Punahou School, daughter of Daryl and Stanley Chow. Alternate: Matthew Reiley, home schooled, son of Barbara and Michael Reiley.

U.S. Military Academy: First principal: Michael Prather, of King Kekaulike High School, son of Maureen and Kenneth Prather. Second principal: Melvic Malanog, of Leilehua High School, son of Melicia and Vicente Malanog. Alternate: Musashi de la Cruz, of Lana'i High School, daughter of Joan and Andrew de la Cruz.

U.S. Naval Academy: First principal: Christopher Hironaga, of New Mexico Military prep school, son of Judy and Mark Hironaga. Second principal: Curtis Lefrandt, of University Laboratory School, son of Joye and Frank Lefrandt. Alternates: David Carter, of Kalaheo High School, son of Susan and Dave Carter; and Dylan Payne of Lahainaluna High School, son of Lisa and Wendell Payne.

U.S. Merchant Marine Academy: Principals: Timothy Dolan, of Maryknoll High School, son of Anne K. Dolan and Richard L. Students earn scholarships

The Clerical Staff Council of Leeward Community College has awarded two $550 scholarships toward education at the school: Desirae J. Vargas, majoring in office administration and technology, and Ejaz Din, majoring in automotive technology.


Kaka'ako group chooses board

The Kaka'ako Improvement Association has announced its new board members and officers:

  • Officers: president Don Ojiri, vice president Kendall Hee, secretary Beverly Harbin and treasurer Dick Hagstrom.
  • Board members: Don Bremner, Dave Chun, Jay Kadowaki, Debbie Kim, Paul Kimura, John Peterson, Melisa Preus, Susan Utsugi and Dick Yakoo.


Attorney named civil rights chief

Attorney Christopher Leon Jones Jr. has been named deputy executive director of the Hawai'i Civil Rights Commission.

The commission is responsible for enforcement of civil rights laws in the state prohibiting discrimination in employment, public accommodations, real property transactions and access to state financial assistance.

Jones has served as an HCRC investigator since 2001, and before that was an attorney-adviser with the Department of Justice.
