Pitcher Coogan honored by WAC

Hawai'i's Melissa Coogan was named Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week after leading the Rainbow Wahine to four wins last week.

The Rainbow Wahine were 4-2 on the road last week, including two wins at Loyola Marymount and victories at Southern Utah, and UC Riverside.

Coogan, a sophomore from West Hills, Calif., allowed just three earned runs in five games, and finished with 12 strikeouts and a 0.72 ERA.

She is 7-2 with a 1.16 ERA in 10 appearances this season.

The Rainbows meet Hawai'i-Hilo in an exhibition game on Sunday.

MORE SOFTBALL

BYUH wins two at home: Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Montana State-Billings, 3-2 and 3-2, yesterday to sweep the visiting Yellowjackets and improving to 7-4 overall and 4-0 in the Pacific West Conference.

In the first game, the Seasiders trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Emily Lister's single scored Crystal elton for the tying run and moved Laura Nelson to third. Michelle Gibson's single to left field drove home Nelson for the winning run.

In the second game, BYUH also scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and no outs, Gibson hit a ground ball to third base. An overthrow to home by the third baseman scored Elton and gave BYUH the win.

The teams meet again today in Lai'e at 1 p.m.

TENNIS

HPU defeats UH: Hawai'i Pacific routed Hawai'i, 8-1, yesterday in a men's tennis match at the UH-Manoa tennis complex.

The Sea Warriors (3-1) swept the doubles and won five of the six singles matches. The Rainbow Warriors are 5-8.

The Sea Warriors are ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division II.

CHEERLEADING

Radford, Moanalua win: Varsity pep squads from Radford and Moanalua tied for the O'ahu Interscholastic Assocation cheerleading championship last night at the Neal Blaisdell Center.

The Rams and Menehune finished with 283 points. 'Aiea was third with 269. Moanalua was the defending OIA champion.

The top eight varsity squads qualify for the Local Motion Cheerleading State Championship March 15 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Moanalua also won the OIA junior varsity title last night.
