Alan Sguigna, senior vice president of marketing for Spirent, will move to the London-based company's production plant in Calabasas, Calif.

The move marks another management shift away from Hawai'i by a company that was once the state's largest high-tech employer.

Sguigna has run the Honolulu division of Spirent, a telecommunications test equipment maker, since mid-2001, overseeing a period of reorganization that saw the company transfer or lay off dozens of employees and shift much of its management to the Mainland.

Formerly known as Adtech, Spirent's Honolulu office was once an autonomous corporate entity and had more than 300 employees and $150 million in revenues in 2000. But a period of corporate losses and tough times in the telecom industry forced the company to cut costs, trim its employee base and consolidate operations with Calabasas. The Honolulu operation now has about 170 employees.

Sguigna was off island and unavailable for comment yesterday. But Jackie Jefferson, Spirent's Honolulu spokeswoman, said Sguigna is moving so he can reduce travel time and perform his job more efficiently. "It's mainly so he can be close to some of the executives on a daily basis," Jefferson said.

Another Honolulu manager will assume Sguigna's supervisory role, Jefferson said.
