UH men's swim team leads after first day

The University of Hawai'i men's swimming team is in first place in the National Independent Conference Championships, after first- and second-place relay finishes yesterday in Rochester, Mich.

The team of Peter Thew, Cheyne Bloch, Andrew Affleck and Kurt Boehm won the 800-yard freestyle relay, with a record-setting time of 6 minutes, 30.49 seconds. That broke the previous NIC mark of 6:32.25, set Feb. 28, 2002 by Southern Methodist.

The Rainbows finished second in the 200 medley relay (1:28.56).

Hawai'i had 74 points, followed by Southern Methodist (66) and Florida Atlantic (60).

The UH women are in the Western Athletic Conference Championships in San Antonio, Texas, where they are in third place with 64 points.

SMU is first with 80 points, followed by Nevada with 68.



• BYUH drops to 19th: The Brigham Young-Hawai'i fell six spots to 19th in the Division II National Association of Basketball Coaches Top 25 released yesterday.

The Seasiders (14-3 overall, 8-2 Pacific West) split a pair of games against UH-Hilo last week in Hilo.
