A Stan Sheriff Center crowd of 5,607 saw the Waves lose for the first time in their last 13 matches and drop to 13-2 overall and 11-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
The Warriors, who received a boost from outside hitter Tony Ching (19 kills, 11 digs), improved to 11-5 and 7-5.
This was the Warriors' sixth two-match series of the season. They came away with their fifth split, having lost in four games Wednesday night, but proved that rumors of their demise were greatly exaggerated.
Earlier yesterday, UH outside hitter Pedro Azenha informed the UH coaches that he was leaving the team. While the school announced it was because of "personal reasons," Azenha had told coaches he was disappointed in his diminished playing time.
Wilton said he granted Azenha a release from his UH commitment, and pledged to help him transfer to another school. Azenha will complete the spring semester, although he will not play the rest of the season.
