Saint Louis, Iolani reach state basketball final

Advertiser Staff

Derrick Low scored 18 points — including a thunderous dunk in the closing minutes — tonight to lift the Iolani School boys basketball team to a 53-48 victory over Kamehameha and its third straight appearance in the Hawaiian Airlines State Championship final.

The No. 1 seed and defending champion Raiders (16-0) will play Interscholastic League of Honolulu rival Saint Louis (14-3) for the title tomorrow night at 8 at Blaisdell Arena.

Low, a 6-foot-1 junior point guard who scored 33 points in last year's final, had three steals, one assist and one rebound in addition to his 18 points. But his final field goal, a high-flying dunk in traffic after a dribble penentration, brought the crowd to its feet and gave the Raiders a 46-37 lead with 3:10 remaining.

The Warriors (14-5) staged a late rally to close it to 48-44 on Aaron Kahaloa's 3-pointer with just under a minute left, but Low, Ryan Hirata and Kyle Pape combined for five free throws to seal it.

• Saint Louis 59, Maui 49: Timo Paepule scored 12 points and Desmond Hanohano 11 as Saint Louis beat previously undefeated Maui (15-1) in the other state basketball semifinal.

Consolation games:

• Waimea 54, Kaimuki 53: Jordan Dizon scored 21 points and Desmond Rodrigues added 11 points and six assists as Waimea (9-1) of the Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation held off Kaimuki (11-4) of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association.

• Kalaheo 62, Baldwin 42: Sam Wilhoite scored 25 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the field as the Kalaheo (12-4) of the OIA beat Baldwin (11-6) of the MIL.

• Leilehua 44, Kea'au 41: Zacarias Rivera scored four of his 11 points in the final minute as Leilehua (13-3) of the OIA edged Kea'au (13-2) of the BIIF.
