THE LEFT LANE
Just hangin' loose

Advertiser Staff and news services

Well, they say pageants ought to stretch you, but usually they're talking about the fabric of your personality, not your dress.

Darah Annette Kwai Mei Dung, baby sister of former Miss Hawaii Denby Dung, was crowned Miss Chinatown locally in August. On Feb. 8, the 22-year-old University of Hawai'i senior was elevated to the national title, Miss Chinatown USA, resplendent in a beaded cheongsam. Little did the audience suspect what a trial the dress itself had presented.

When Darah and her mother came home from L.A. after purchasing the stretchy, lacy material, dressmaker Sheron Yuen discovered it was almost

a foot short. But she tried hanging it for a while, and the Spandex delivered:

The dress ended up at a winning length.

Crazy like a Fox

Only three months ago, Fox ranked dead last among the major networks. Now, powered by the twin phenomena of "Joe Millionaire" and "American Idol," Fox is claiming its first sweeps-month victory among young adults. "Going from fourth to first is like whiplash," said Fox executive Gail Berman.

While all the networks frantically snapped up Michael Jackson specials — 10 hours of them aired in a 12-day stretch on three networks — Fox managed to use "Idol" for potentially more lasting gains: "Idol's" lead-in provided big boosts for "24," "That '70s Show" and "Bernie Mac." CBS, which stayed somewhat clear of the youth frenzy, won the February total-viewers contest.

'Baywatch' bridal

David Hasselhoff is getting married in Hawai'i tonight.

Well, more correctly, his "Baywatch Hawai'i" character, Mitch Buchanan, is supposed to take a bride in a reunion show, "Baywatch Hawaiian Wedding," at 7 p.m. tonight on Fox (KHON-2).

Islanders will see many familiar faces and places: "Baywatch" alumnae Pamela Anderson, Yasmine Bleeth, Carmen Electra and Gena Lee Nolan; spinoff series actors Jason Momoa, Stacey Kamano, Michael Bergin, Brande Roderick; and hunky Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa as the bad guy who's trying to break up the big day. As to places: the movie was largely shot at the newly renovated Turtle Bay Resort. The "wedding island" is Kawela Bay. And despite a geographical reference to "California," it's really O'ahu's Rocky Point.
