UH men second at Michigan swim meet

Freshman Andrew Affleck won the 500-yard freestyle and junior Cheyne Bloch the 200 individual medley, but Hawai'i's men's swimming and diving team dropped to second at the National Independent Conference Championships at Rochester, Mich., yesterday.

Southern Methodist led with 613 points. UH, which led after the first day, had 397. The meet ends Sunday.

Affleck won the 500 free in 4 minutes, 23.95 seconds, setting Oakland University Aquatic Center and UH records. It was NCAA "B" qualifying time. "B" qualifiers must wait for an invitation to the NCAA meet.

Bloch won the 200 IM in a school-record and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:46.43.

Rainbow Wahine in fourth: The Rainbow Wahine were fourth with 180 points at the Western Athletic Conference Championships at San Antonio, Texas. SMU leads with 352.

SOFTBALL

HPU sweeps: Tascha Berinobis had five hits and Holly Garcia drove in five runs as Hawai'i Pacific swept a Pacific West Conference doubleheader from Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 7-3 and 6-1, yesterday at HPU softball field in Kane'ohe.

The Sea Warriors are10-2 overall and 5-1 in the PacWest. The Seasiders dropped to 9-6 and 6-2.
