Special election today: Please consider Case

Registered voters in the 2nd Congressional District (Rural O'ahu — Neighbor Islands) have an important piece of work to get out of the way today before hitting the beach or the shopping malls.

Polls will be open to elect Hawai'i's representative for Congress from the 2nd District. The election is necessary due to the death of longtime incumbent Patsy Mink, who passed away shortly before the regular Nov. 5 election.

This special election is winner-take-all, with numerous candidates from all parties on the ballot. The winner most likely will be selected by a plurality, not a majority. That makes every vote extra important.

There are 44 candidates on the ballot, representing every level of political experience and political persuasion. Lack of choice cannot be an excuse for not voting.

The Advertiser has endorsed Democrat Ed Case for this seat. Case won a short-term special election to fill out the remainder of Mink's term in the last Congress and is already getting up to speed.

Hawai'i will do well to have someone with Case's independence, courage, intelligence and rational approach to the issues representing us in Congress.
