'Aiea High girls varsity basketball coach Fran Villarmia-Kahawai, who led Na Ali'i to the state championship in 2001, has resigned to devote more time to her family and career, school officials announced yesterday.

Villarmia-Kahawai began her coaching career as an assistant boys coach at 'Aiea in 1993. She was the boys junior varsity head coach from 1996-98, and took over the girls varsity team in 1999.

Applications for the position are being accepted by the school's athletic department. Call athletic director Roy Miyoga at 483-7328 for more information.

BASKETBALL

BYUH wins, 84-65: Alexus Foyle scored 27 points and Shawn Opunui added 23, powering Brigham Young-Hawai'i to an 84-65 victory over Saint Martin's of Lacey, Wash., last night at the Cannon Activities Center in La'i.e.

The host Seasiders (6-1) raced to a 40-27 halftime lead and the Saints never threatened in falling to 0-10.

BYUH made 12-of-22 3-point shots with Opunui draining seven of his eight attempts.

Nick Gibbs scored 12 and Brandon Bartley added 11 for the Saints.

TENNIS

Somerville victorious: Betsy Somerville Purpura won the women's open doubles title at the U.S. Tennis Association National Indoors last week at Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Purpura, a three-time Hawai'i high school champion, is the women's tennis coach at Seton Hall. Her partner was Laura Glitz. Both women live in New Jersey.

Purpura and Glitz defeated New York's Katrina Diankova and Megan Zebroski, 7-5, 6-3, in the semifinals. They blitzed Stacie Fonseca and Becky Gordon of Florida, 6-1, 6-1 in the final.

This is Purpura's second national title. In 2001, she partnered with her mother, Hattie Somerville, to win the National Senior Mother and Daughter Championships.
