Large surf to hit Hawai'i

 •  O'ahu hit with gusts up to 60 mph

Associated Press

The National Weather Service said last night that overnight surf along the northwest-facing shores of O'ahu and Kaua'i could reach as high at 50 feet.

The northwest-facing shores of all islands remained under a high surf advisory.

The O'ahu Civil Defense Agency advised affected residents to prepare for possible evacuation because of possible flooding of coastal areas.

Forecasters predicted O'ahu and Kaua'i could be hit with 30- to 40-foot high waves, with occasional sets to 50 feet.

Surf heights for Maui, Moloka'i and Lana'i were forecast for 25 to 35 feet, with sets to 45 feet. The Big Island was predicted to get 12- to 18-foot surf, with sets up to 25 feet.

Residents were advised to take necessary precautions to protect life and property.

Beachgoers along the affected shores should stay out of the water and well away from the shore break, the weather service said.
