Campbell holds off 'Aiea, 44-36

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

'AIEA — When people hear the name Amosa Amosa, many think of football. And when they think of his high school, they still may think of Campbell.

Kailua's Erin Guerrero, middle, shields her eyes from the dust in a game against Kaimuki. Kailua won the OIA contest, 8-0.

Jeff Widener • The Honolulu Advertiser

That will happen when you and eight brothers and sisters graduated from there and you still live in 'Ewa Beach.

But there was Amosa last night, the former All-Western Athletic Conference offensive lineman coaching on the 'Aiea sideline against his alma mater. In boys basketball.

Campbell won the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division opener, 44-36, spoiling Amosa's OIA debut as a head basketball coach.

Sort of.

"Some coaches will try to use that as motivation — going up against your old high school," Amosa said. "But that's not how I feel. When we play them, I try to look at Campbell as just another school."

Campbell led almost from start to finish, although the final margin was the Sabers' biggest. Na Ali'i closed it to 31-29 early in the final period on RJ Kiesel-Kauhane's jumper and Rocky Savai'igaea hit two free throws to cut Campbell's lead to 40-36 with 1:18 remaining.

But Marcus VanNess hit a turnaround jumper to make it 42-36 with a minute to go and Taetuli Tafai sealed it with a layup with 15 seconds left.

All 10 players in the Sabers' two-platoon system scored, led by Tristan Bailey's nine. 'Aiea, on the other hand, suited up only eight players due to illness, Mainland family trips and disciplinary action. The starting five played the entire first half.

"Our policy is if you miss even one practice, you have to sit out a half," Amosa said.

Amosa, who starred for the University of Hawai'i in football and has been an offensive coordinator for 'Aiea and Campbell in the past decade, is no stranger to the hardwood. He was an All-OIA West center in 1984.

"I coached against him," said 'Aiea assistant Rodney Cavaco, who preceded Amosa as Na Ali'i's head coach. "He was a good player. He could dunk."

Amosa taught at the Alternative Learning Center at Campbell and and coached Sabers football for nine years after graduating from UH, but left the football staff in 1999 after philosophical differences.

"It was almost the perfect situation for me, because I was at my alma mater, teaching kids who were having a hard time with school," Amosa said. "With me being from 'Ewa Beach and going on to college and doing well, I was someone they could look at."

But Amosa said he is very happy coaching and teaching special education math at 'Aiea, especially with his new basketball job.

"I love it," Amosa said. "Basketball is more fast-paced. And everybody has been real good to me."
