Firefighters rescue Wai'anae hiker

Fire rescue specialists today hiked into Wai'anae Valley to bring out an injured man who was reported missing late last night by his family.

The 58-year-old man was using a cell phone to guide firefighters to his location. Communication between the man and rescue specialists was established at about 9:30 a.m., said Fire Capt. Richard Soo.

The man was on a hike with members of the Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club yesterday when he fell off the Kamaile'unu ridge trail. "He's stuck in a tree and has a broken leg and broken collarbone," Soo said.

The man was brought out by helicopter about 1:30 p.m. and flown to The Queen’s Medical Center, where he was in guarded condition with a broken right elbow, back and neck injuries, and cuts to his forehead.

A second bank robbery suspect, meanwhile, is still at large. The man presented a demand note to a teller at American Savings Bank's Kaheka branch at 1600 Kap'iolani Blvd. at 3:40 p.m. and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Arrest made in stabbing

A man was stabbed in the abdomen early today while trying to break up a fight on North Nimitz Highway near Maunakea Street.

The incident was reported at 2:30 a.m.

The man's injury does not appear to be critical, police said. He is hospitalized at The Queen's Medical Center.

The fight involved a group of men who fled the scene. Police, however, later arrested a man for the stabbing but have been unable to question him because he was intoxicated.
