Toss Christmas tree easy way

By Walter Wright
Advertiser Staff Writer

With Christmas over and the new year begun, the state Health Department reminds O'ahu residents that they have several options for disposing of their Christmas trees with minimal effect on the environment.

Call for information

For recorded information on tree recycling programs around the state, call:

  • O'ahu, 521-2447
  • Maui, 270-7880
  • Big Island, 961-2676
  • Lana'i and Moloka'i residents, (888) 991-4000
  • Kaua'i, 241-6891
Trees without tinsel or other ornaments remaining on them may be turned in to "tree cycling" sites open on Saturday, where they will be mulched for use in parks and other sites.

Residents also can have trees hauled from curbside in scheduled green waste pick-ups, or drop trees at refuse and recycling centers in 'Ewa, La'ie, Wahiawa, Waimanalo, Waipahu and Wai'anae, or at city composting sites at Ke'ehi and Hawaiian Earth Products (Kailua or Kapolei).

Tree recycling sites will be open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at:

  • Kailua Intermediate School
  • Kaiser High School
  • Kapalama Elementary School
  • Kapolei Elementary School
  • Mililani Maka'unulau Park
  • Waimea Falls Park
  • Waiau District Park
  • Polynesian Cultural Center
  • University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Richardson Law School
  • The Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center
  • Kapi'olani Community College

Christmas tree recycling programs also have been announced on the Neighbor Islands.

On the Big Island, residents in Hilo, Kailua, Kona, and Puna should take their trees to the county rubbish transfer stations.

On Kaua'i, trees can be dropped off at Kaua'i Nursery and Landscaping outside Puhi, until Jan. 31. All decorations should be removed. After hours, trees can be left at the entrance gate at 3-1550 Kaumuali'i Highway or any county rubbish transfer station.

On Maui, trees can be dropped off at Maui Earth Compost Co. on Hansen Road and Oma'opio Road from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily except Sunday; EKO Composting at the Central Landfill on Oma'opio Road, 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily; Campaign Recycle Maui on Waiko Road in Waikapu, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. except Sunday; and the Olowalu Recycling Center, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays.

Kihei residents may leave their trees at the Maui Earth Compost Co. site behind the Kihei wastewater treatment plant, off Pi'ilani Highway. Trees should not be left at Kalama Park.

A special drop-off day is planned 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Papa Avenue soccer field in Kahului, the Ha'iku Community Center and the Hannibal Tavares Community Center in Pukalani.
