Lewis volleyball players injured in Waikiki scuffle

Advertiser Staff

Two Lewis University (of Illinois) volleyball players suffered injuries during a scuffle in Waikiki Monday night, according to head coach Dave Deuser.

Deuser said five men approached Lewis outside hitter Matt Mueller and middle blocker Greg Pochopien on the corner of Kalakaua Avenue and Lewers Street just before midnight.

Deuser said his players were attacked, with Mueller suffering a fractured cheekbone and Pochopien sustaining a concussion. Both were treated at Straub Clinic & Hospital and released.

Deuser said both reserves will not play in tomorrow night's match against the University of Hawai'i.

"This is our seventh time here, and we've never had any kind of incident," Deuser said. "It's unfortunate."
