Tonight's Must-See

"The Shield" season opener, 8 & 9 p.m., FX. As the first season ended, the unbreakable Detective Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis) had crumbled into tears. His wife had taken their children and gone into hiding. Now he's desperate to find them. He needs money for private detectives and will do anything to get it. He could reach into his tainted slush fund, but his colleagues have lost the money to a Mexican drug lord. Now Mackey has his most outrageous idea — driving to Mexico to get the money back. In the "Shield" style, this is brutal, bruising and intense.

Of Note

"Just Shoot Me," 7 p.m., NBC. Nina and Vicki scheme for payback after Finch pulls a practical joke.

"In-Laws," 7:30 p.m., NBC. Matt meets the successful hunk his wife dated. Indeed, his father-in-law told everyone she married the guy.

"24," 8 p.m., FOX. After a two-week break this superb series returns in midair crisis. Jack is on a plane with the hated Nina, the double agent who killed his wife. The plane wobbles toward a crash.

"Frasier," 8 p.m., NBC. Ana Gasteyer of "Saturday Night Live" plays the evaluator who judges Daphne's physical-therapy skill.

"Kofi Annan: Center of the Storm," 9 p.m., PBS. With little money and no standing army, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan faces the world's epic problems. At times, he has failed. The United Nations was helpless to save Rwanda. In others, he has succeeded; this documentary watches a transition in Afghanistan and an independence celebration in East Timor. It's a fascinating tale.

"Hidden Hills" (NBC) and "Less than perfect" (ABC), both 8:30 p.m. Joanna Cassidy competes with herself. On NBC, she's the mom of Janine (Paula Marshall); on ABC, she's a news producer who might mentor Lydia (Andrea Parker).
