Koki, 56, will be responsible for recruiting and screening applicants to 138 boards and commissions. He served in the state Senate from 1988 to 1994 and is the founder and former owner of American Carpet Co.

Koki was Lingle's running mate in her failed 1998 campaign for governor. Lingle's chief of staff, Bob Awana, managed Koki's unsuccessful 1994 bid for the Republican lieutenant governor nomination.

Koki said he sought the job because he wanted to participate in the new administration.

"We were given various options and I thought that my experience in government would be well suited for this position," he said. "I just wanted to be able to still serve in public service."

The position, which falls under the governor's office, pays $45,000 a year.

"I thought he would do a good job at it," Awana said. "I had a chance to work with him before and he said he wanted to come in and help us with the new beginning."
