'Ewa road plans to be discussed

Construction of a north-south road in 'Ewa will be discussed at a community meeting at 7 p.m. today at Asing Park Recreational Building in 'Ewa Beach.

Sen. Willie Espero, D-20th ('Ewa Beach, Waipahu) is sponsoring the meeting, which will discuss the status of the road scheduled for construction late next year.

'Ewa residents have long voiced concern about traffic in their community, accessible by only one access, Fort Weaver Road.

Near-death experts to meet

The International Association for Near-Death Studies will host its national conference tomorrow through Friday at the Sheraton Waikiki.

This is the first time the national organization, which is devoted to the study of near-death and similar experiences that affect the human consciousness, is holding its conference in Hawai'i.

Experts will discuss research, new healing techniques and ways that healthcare professionals can help those traumatized by near-death experiences.

Registration starts at 8 a.m. Wednesday and 7:30 a.m. Thursday and Friday.

The cost for the full conference is $255 for association members and $285 for non-members.

Snapped ground wire causes fire

KULA, Maui — Sparks from a power line ignited a fire that burned 2.5 acres of brush yesterday off Pulehu Road.

The fire started at 9:45 a.m. after a ground wire that protects electrical lines from lightning strikes snapped and came into contact with a power line, said a Maui Electric Co. spokesman.

The fire was extinguished around 1 p.m., said acting Assistant Fire Chief Robert Shimada.


Man injured in jump off falls

HILO, Hawai'i — A 23-year-old Minnesota man was airlifted to The Queen's Medical Center after he broke his tailbone as a result of jumping off Rainbow Falls in Hilo.

Ryan Meeker of Winona, Minn., apparently landed on rocks at about 5 p.m. Sunday, police said. He was reported to be in stable condition.
